1. GoPro Hero 5 Session – Editor’s Choice
First on our list is the GoPro Hero 5 Session. This camera is packed with a lot of unique features and comes at a very reasonable price. GoPro is hands down leading the game in compact action cameras, everyone knows it.
This high-end camera is packed with tons of features including 4k filming, 10MP stills, video stabilization, simultaneous video and still capture, voice control, wifi, and Bluetooth connectivity, advanced wind noise reduction via 2 microphones, and it’s also waterproof up to 10 meters.
It’s around 1×1×1 inch cube which means you will be able to easily attach the camera to literally anything and the operation is a large shutter button and a mode selection button with a slim LCD display that literally tells you everything that’s happening.
As you can see the display is relatively small and in order to get over the lack of display, the GoPro comes equipped with a phone app that you can connect and gain full camera control and live stream of what’s being recorded. You even have to ability to playback recorded clips and also edit them into a movie if you want.
The video stabilization is pretty good, it’s not the best out there, but it’s definitely above average, it only utilizes this feature up to 2.7k. With this you also have the command voice, however, I don’t think it would be a good idea turning this feature on since there will be a lot of shouting going on in the battlefield.
With that being said, the GoPro Hero 5 Session is an amazing upgrade of the older model Silver range, capable of performing in all weather conditions. Even though it is a bit on the expensive side, it will provide you with years of use without the need to constantly searching for a better quality camera.
This camera comes in at a lightweight of around 2.6 ounces making it the lightest camera on our list. I think it would fit best if you mount it on top of the mask, but it would also work great if you mount it on the side as well.
Pros
- Pretty lightweight
- Camera quality is next level
- Has a superb performance
- Packed with tons of unique features
Cons
- Connection to the mobile app is intermittent
- A bit expensive
2. Yi 4k+ – High-End Performance
The Yi 4k+ is another high-quality camera and is considered to be just as good as the GoPro Hero 5 Session. This camera is equipped with tons of amazing features and comes at a relatively cheap price.
The company still maintains that the camera is the “best action camera ever” with the new capability to easily record 4k at 60fps being one of the key features to back this claim up.
With this high-end camera you will be able to record at a variety of other resolutions, including Full HD. You can even take still photos, including the ability to shoot in raw format.
The Yi 4k+ also has an external housing. I highly recommend using it since it will help to protect it from paintball hits you’re going to encounter while running around on the paintball field.
With this high-end camera you can expect various types of shooting resolutions such as 720p at 240 frames per second, 1080p at 120 frames per second, 2.7k at 60 frames per second and 4k at 60 frames per second which is pretty decent.
I’m really surprised that it can actually do 4k at 60 frames per second. Even some of the most full-frame cameras on the market don’t have the capability of doing it.
You’ll also appreciate the fact that it comes equipped with voice command feature but as I have mentioned earlier on the previous camera this is not necessary since you will be screaming a lot while on the field.
The battery life is pretty good, it will be able to last you for a long while before needing to recharge. The batteries are also swappable so if you have any spare ones in your possession, you’re definitely going to last all day.
Pros
- Has a unique design
- Packed with features
- High-end performance
- Has multiple ranges of resolution
- Video quality is nice and smooth
Cons
- Not waterproof without the housing
3. GoPro Hero 5 Black – Great Value For The Money
Next on our list is this superb quality GoPro Hero 5 Black action camera. If your goal is to invest in one of the best camera units on the market for your paintball journey then the GoPro Hero 5 Black will be the best option for you.
This action camera is packed with some of the best features that serve with amazing results for video recording as well as stills. The GoPro Hero 5 Black is an upgraded version of the Hero4 Black with added stabilization feature and improved resolution so that you will be able to enjoy immersive recording while on the battlefield.
With this high-quality camera you can expect a touch screen display and it’s designed with classic waterproof material so that you can easily operate it even for snorkeling or other underwater applications.
The GoPro Hero 5 Black is equipped with voice controls, improved audio capabilities, image stabilization, and its GPS enabled control makes it one of the best action cameras for the money.
The camera has multiple shooting resolutions such as 720p at 240 frames per second, 1080p at 120 frames per second, 2.7k at 60 frames per second and 4k at 30 frames per second which is pretty decent.
It has an impressive electronic video stabilization as well, but like its older model, it could only utilize this feature up to 2.7k. It has a voice control feature, but I don’t suggest using it during gameplay as it can be quite confusing.
I think you will appreciate the battery that it comes with, not only that but you’ll love fact that the batteries are swappable. So if you have enough spares in your possession, you’ll have no problem lasting the day on the field.
The GoPro app is extremely handy, it provides you with the ability to connect to the camera directly and change advanced settings access videos and many other things but you could also do this by simply using the touchscreen on the back of the camera.
Pros
- Battery life is pretty good
- Has various shooting resolutions
- Captures impressive 4k video with good electronic stabilization
- Touchscreen feature
- Three stereo mics
Cons
- No EIS for 4k recording, Unable to work with old batteries
4. Sony FDRX3000R – Advanced Camera
The last action camera on our list is this Sony FDRX3000R. Even though it is known to be well expensive compared to the others on this list, it’s totally worth the investment.
Sony is well known on the market for producing some of the most advanced as well as high quality cameras and this is definitely one of them.
One of the biggest downside with this camera is the fact that it’s not waterproof or shockproof so what you will need to do is use the waterproof housing that comes with it.
Just like the cameras mentioned above, this also has various shooting resolutions including 720p at 240p frames per second, 1080p at 120 frames per second and 4k at 30 frames per second which is really good.
We really like the fact that it has optical stabilization which is the preferred way of stabilizing video compared to the electronic video stabilization feature in most cameras out there. It also has a decent battery life, so having a few spare batteries will give you the opportunity to video all day without experiencing any problems.
Sony FDRX3000R is a great value for the money, you also have the option to use the Sony action app which is great even though it lacks a few basic features. Apart from that, the Sony FDRX3000R also comes with a live view remote, you can use it to control the action camera and view the live feed. The live view remote also comes with a wristband so it can also be worn as a watch.
Pros
- Has impressive image and audio quality
- Good optical image stabilization
- Equipped with a long battery life
- Feature a unique design
Cons
- Bulky waterproof case
- Poor display on the live-view remote control
Things to Consider When Buying a Paintball Action Camera
Battery Life
The battery life is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to buying a paintball action camera. You should keep in mind that the battery life will only last for a couple hours, so you need to make sure you have a backup plan; wthat you’ll need is a portable charger or a charging source at the location.
Another good idea would be to look at the battery life rather than the battery capacity so that you have a clearer image of the duration of the camera.
Size and Weight
Another important thing to consider is the size and weight of the camera. Make sure to invest in the smallest and lightest camera possible. The reason for this is because it will be much easier for you to install and wear on your headband, barrel or body of the paintball gun. Whether the camera is mounted on your head or on the gun itself, you can rest assured that it is well secured.
Storage Capacity
Due to the fact that action cameras doesn’t comes with internal storage, you have to make sure you have a micro SD in your possession to prevent yourself from not being able to record in the middle of an intense paintball game. Remember it’s always essential to have an extra memory card, because you might to swap between the two at some point during the game.
Resolution
Before purchasing a action camera you should take the resolution of the camera in mind. Make sure to get one that best fit your needs and the bigger is usually better. Also if u take the time out to add a reasonable frame rate to it, then the camera will perform much smoother. Most cameras tends to capture footage at 720p and 24 frames per second, but if you want the perfect camera quality, you should go for 2.7k at 60 fps.
Water Resistant
If your goal is to use the paintball action camera on all weather conditions, then definitely go for one that is completely waterproof. But if you usually play in clear weather, then having a water resistance camera shouldn’t be a problem.
Internet Connection
The latest paintball action cameras usually comes with internet connection making it possible to share your captions or videos directly to your social media account while your at the field. Another benefit that comes with this is that you’ll be able to use your camera’s internet connection to transfer data to your computer, tablet or Smartphone.
Budget
You should definitely keep your budget in mind when looking to buy a new camera. The cheapest cameras on the market tends to go for around $50 and the more expensive ones goes for little over $200. We don’t recommend getting the cheap ones since they only have the basic features, while the ones that are more pricier comes with tons of features and far better resolution that offers image stabilization, live streaming and some are even water-resistant which is amazing.
